Anointing of the Sick in its Pastoral, Theological, and Historical Dimensions

Friday May 29, 2026
8:00am-4:00pm
St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich Village

The sacrament of the anointing of the sick has enjoyed increased use after Vatican II clarified that it is not only for those at the point of death, and following the simplification of the rite by Pope St Paul VI. Recent scholars have continued to explore theological and pastoral considerations surrounding this oft-neglected sacrament. These include distinguishing the effects of anointing from those of other sacraments, determining who is an appropriate recipient of anointing, and appreciating the sacrament as a remedy for societal ills in end-of-life care.  This colloquium will engage with the thought of Thomas Aquinas to build on previous work on anointing of the sick, with attention also given to the Dominican rite of anointing, the apostolic pardon, and the new edition of The Order of Anointing of the Sick and of their Pastoral Care.
